Instead of a DJ, consider getting live musicians for your wedding. No matter what genre of music you are interested in – pop, classical or anything in between – live music can add just the right touch to your wedding.
For your ceremony, consider hiring a soloist, harpist, violinist or flutist. For the reception, any type of music will do, depending on the theme and style of your wedding, as well as your personal preferences.
When hiring live singers and musicans, you need to be very selective. As you can imagine, bad music or musicians that are late (or worse yet, don’t show up) can ruin your special day.
If you have friends or relatives who have gotten married recently, ask for personal referrals. They can often recommend a great band (or tell you who to steer clear of). If you are looking for classical music but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg, try the orchestra or symphony from a local college. They can often be hired for weddings on the cheap.
Get a demo CD or tape from your top choices but when it comes down to making a selection, try to see them play live. A recorded tape can give you a good idea, but seeing them live can tell you so much more.
Be sure to book your wedding musicians and singers very early on, if possible. Some of the best vendors book a year in advance (or longer).
