Cool Wedding Cake Trends

My friend’s cousin is planning her wedding right now and she has decided to go with a Jell-O cake instead of your traditional wedding cake. Her thought is that it’s incredibly cheap, and hey — almost everyone like Jell-O. I have seen these gelatin cakes in some bridal magazines and though it’s a little weird, it’s not such a bad idea. It does save tons of money compared to the cost of an elaborate wedding cake.

If you are looking to do something a little different for your wedding cake, you have plenty of options to choose from. Long gone are the days of a plain white wedding cake with white icing.

My Pink Apron

Get Colorful

The topsy turvy cake in vibrant colors is one of the hottest trends in wedding cakes. These cakes, such as the one pictured here from My Pink Apron, a Toronto wedding cake specialist, add a splash of color and lots of fun to your wedding reception.

Get Personal

Personalize your wedding cake with monograms of your initials or by incorporating some of your hobbies into the cake. For example, if you and your husband-to-be are avid skiers, you can have a ski theme to your cake with a slope down the side and bride/groom skiers on top.

Get Cupcakes

Cupcakes aren’t just for children’s birthday parties anymore. Many wedding cake designers in Toronto and all around Canada are serving up batches of cupcakes stacked in the shape of a wedding cake. Your wedding guests are more likely to eat a cupcake than a slice of cake. Plus, you’ll save some much needed cash.

When choosing your wedding cake, visit several bakeries. Check out pictures of cakes they have made for previous weddings and ask for a list of referrals. Also, schedule a time of a tasting. It’s very important to find out what you are getting by actually having a taste. The most important thing is to communicate with your wedding cake designer. Let them know how much you can spend, along with the special elements and themes you’d like to incorporate into your cake.
